How to save money on your housing gas bill in Poland?

It's no secret that already from the beginning of autumn the temperature in Poland starts to drop rapidly. Already in October, the average temperature at night can reach 10 degrees Celsius and this means that the local authorities officially start the heating season. Most people today pay for their homes in Poland with gas.

We should also note that people's payments in Poland will start to increase this year. This is due to the fact that Poland is starting to give up coal production because of the EU's green energy requirements. It is not yet known exactly how much they will increase tariffs for blue fuel, but it is clear that it will definitely happen in the 3rd quarter of 2024. That is why people in Poland should start looking for ways to save money on heating today. In this article we would like to tell you about a great way to get back some of the money for heating your home in Poland without sacrificing the indoor temperature.

In one of the crisis management laws, namely Dz.U. 2024 poz. 303 provides for the possibility of refunding value added tax (VAT) to residents of Poland. This is only available for domestic dwellings and does not apply to businesses and other business premises.

The term «gas» refers to natural gas that contains nitrogen or methane. This also includes propane, butane and other blue fuels that are used in Poland to heat residential buildings.

Who doesn't have access to VAT refunds for gas payments?

Certainly, the most important thing is to claim a value added tax refund for paying for the heating of a residential home. You won't be able to save money this way when it comes to an office, factory or other commercial space. Here's what can cause you to be denied a tax refund:

  • You have exclusively gas stoves installed in your home.

  • You buy gas cylinders.

  • You use gas only to heat water.

Simply speaking, you must use natural gas on a regular basis to pay for your entire residential home.

Main criteria for VAT refund

Surely, as in any law, there are also its nuances and criteria. That is, not everyone will be able to get VAT for home heating payments. Before claiming it, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the list of criteria:

  • Income of family members. If you live in a house alone, your income must not exceed 2100 PLN per month. If several people live in the same house, the monthly income per person cannot be more than 1,500 PLN.

  • Official gas equipment. Your gas equipment must be officially registered with the state system CEEB (Centralnej Ewidencji Emisyjności Budynków).

Another important point is that only the person for whom the gas supply contract was registered can claim a tax refund. Even if you are the closest relative of that person, you will not get anything.

What should you know about filing for a refund?

Finally, we come to the most important part of this article - filling out the application for a VAT refund for home heating with gas. So, let's start with the fact that there are two ways to fill in and submit the application form - offline and online.

You can download the form to fill out on the official website. You will need to attach a few papers to this application: a copy of the contract with the gas supplier, a copy of the blue fuel invoice and a receipt of payment. If you don't want to spend your personal time, you can apply online. To do this, you will have to use ePUAP or the new mObywatel application.
